Mrs. Smith
Instructor: Mrs. Gina Smith

I teach language arts and social studies.  Language arts is a combination of reading, English grammar, spelling, and composition.  These grades will be combined to form one language arts grade on interim reports and regular report cards.  We will use the reading textbook, the English grammar book, and perhaps a novel or two.  Curriculum is driven by the South Carolina Reading Standards.

Social studies is a content oriented course.  We will be using the textbook and other materials, such as the PACT Coach, and related videos. Curriculum is driven by the South Carolina Social Studies Standards.
Class Announcements
Standard Weekly Assignments
DOL is distributed each Monday. We do the work orally, and I write the corrections on the overhead. We have a quiz each Friday.

Read 4 Today is a standards-based set of activities. The practice page is distributed each Monday. There is a quiz each Friday.

DOG runs on a two week schedule. Monday through Thursday students are given two questions a day to answer using the student atlas in their desk. The questions are gone over orally, and students have a quiz every other Friday. They are allowed to use the notes on the quiz.

Reading study guides are provided for each story or novel that is to be tested. We complete the questions in class and go over the responses. Tests are taken from the study guide and are given as the reading assignment is completed.

These assignments are subject to change during short weeks, over a holiday, or weeks with early dismissals. Please check the agenda for modifications of this type.
Social Studies
This year in Social Studies, students will be required to take notes from the overhead and to keep track of them in a binder. Fifth grade begins the year studying Reconstruction. From there we move to Westward Expansion.
Reading
Our school is implementing Balanced Literacy this year. This will create quite a change in the organization and daily structure of ELA in the classroom. I will be using a combination of the Reading textbook, leveled readers, and novels this year.
Classroom Needs
Parents and guardians, I am asking for your help. Our classroom is always in need of suppplies. We are in need of Kleenex, hand sanitizer, pencils, cap erasers, and loose leaf notebook paper. These items are needed daily. We could also use donations of colored pencils, glue sticks, and markers. Any help that you can give us in this area will be greatly appreciated.
Meet the Teacher
My name is Gina McCarty Smith. I graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School in 1980, and from USC Aiken with a degree in Elementary Education in 1984. I received my Masters Degree from the University of South Carolina in 1992.

I am married to Bert Smith and have two sons, Matt and Dave. My oldest son, Matt, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in May, and is now preparing for his next assignment. My youngest son, Dave, is an eleventh grader at Batesburg-Leesville High School and plays on the football and golf team.

We have a ten month old Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Belle, and we live on Lake Murray. In my spare time I enjoy reading, spending time on our boat, playing with my dog, and following the Batesburg-Leesville Panther football team. GO PANTHERS!!
